BIOGRAPHY

I design and build privately commissioned contemporary custom furniture for individual clients and designers from my workshop in San Diego, Ca. Having studied traditional methods of furniture-making and classical marquetry with some of todays modern masters, I am able to combine beautiful materials, premium craftsmanship and a touch of artistry to create custom furniture of the highest caliber. I attempt to fill the basic need for functional objects with creative detailed work far exceeding expectations.

In recent years my furniture has won numerous Best Of Show and 1st Place Awards in regional and national exhibitions including Best Of Show at the 2007 International Design In Wood Exhibition and Best of Show at the 2007 Artistry In Wood Exhibition at the Sonoma County Museum of Art for two contemporary marquetry embellished furniture pieces. More recently my Art Deco Chess Table won Best of Show at the 2009 Artistry In Wood Exhibition.

For the past few years I have been incorporating marquetry imagery in the form of flowers, branches and animals into select pieces of my furniture. Enhancing my furniture with subtle floral ornamentations allows me to combine the structural geometry of a man made object with the asymmetry of nature represented in flower and leaf patterns and motifs. I see the addition of decorative marquetry as a doorway into unique and exciting visual forms and more creative freedom.

Another side of my work explores the highly formal furniture of the 1920’s Art Deco era, primarily work by the designer Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann. The creation of custom furniture true to the Art Deco style requires tremendous focus and discipline and is a welcome change from the more relaxed floral decorations of my marquetry furniture. To build my Art Deco furniture I bring together luxurious materials, outstanding finishes and precise highly refined veneer work.

Client involvement has been key to my work from the very beginning. Many clients commission marquetry furniture with very specific ideas in mind for the floral arrangement and its composition. Others prefer to leave me a bit more creative space to explore and see where it leads. I appreciate both methods and each brings interesting challenges to my work. Often designing furniture that fulfills the desires of the client allows me to build pieces that I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to create.
